BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usaal fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr McGowan), Crs Radford, Wilson, Wood, Trembath, Jas. Brown, Thos. Brown, Koefoed, and Coiner. The minutes of the previous-.meeting were read and confirmed. Pjkospkctxno.—Messrs F. Bennett and A. Griffiths, who have for the past three years been prospecting a piece of ground, situated on the north side of the Tararu Creek, applied for a little assistance in theirinjure operations. Their object is to cyiwreef running parallel to the creek, and they estimate that they will have to drive a distance of about 30 or 40 feet before the lode will be met with. They asked that the Council would grant a sum per foot, or a certain sum per week. After some discussion it was resolved thai the matter be referred to the General Purposes Committee, the Town Clerk to submit the regnlations under which the Council can grant assistance. „ j' •« Trees.—Mr P. Delahunty applied for permission to cut down three trees in Setley street.—Granted.—The Foreman of Works was authorised to level the mullock; and soil near the Borough reservoir at Parawai, while the General Purposes Commtttee were granted further time to report upon Mr Stilwell's offer re planting trees. , , „ Gas Mains.—Upon the recommendation of the General Purposes Committee it was decided that the water rate on the gas mains be the same as that levied in Auckland. , t Davy Stbeet.-—A letter was read from Mr J. F. Baker asking the Council to repair the footpath in Davy street.—Ordered to be attended to. „ . . Tekdeks.—The question of inviting tenders for carting, etc., was referred to the General Purposes Committee. Waiotahi Road.—The state of the road near the Waiotabi battery was referred to by Cr Thos. Brown, and it was decided that the Foreman of Works should at once turn the running water into the aqueduct. Karaka Creek.—The General Purposes Committee stated in their report that the Foreman of Works had reported that the cost of clearing the creek of gravel from a Doint on the east side of Mackay street to the month would be £140, but the Committee had not yet decided upon the manner in which it would be advisable to carry out the work.—Cr Radford thought that if the two bridges were raised about 2ft it would be cheaper and just as effective as cleaning out the creek.—lt was decided tbat the Committee shonld also take this matter into consideration. Fibebem.—Mr Kennerley, Secretary of the Fire Brigade wrote as follows:-' I am instructed by the officers of the_Brigade to again draw the attention of the Borough Council to the want of a better alarm in case of fire than is given at present. The officers feel it is not justice to the members of the Brigade for two-thirds of them not to be able to hear the alarm when given in the night time. Hoping that you will favorably consider the matter."—A letter received, by Capt Paterson from Messrs Anderson and Morrison, was also forwarded ior the consideration of the Council, and showed the prices of various sized bells.— The Mayor said there was not the slightest doubt that there was a determination to get a new bell, and it was quite right that there •hould be bells capable of making themselves heard, but the one in question had done service for a great number of years, and it was only lately the bell had been pronounced as no good. However, lie might say that he heard it quite plainly the other night.—On the motion ot Cr Koefoed it was resolved that the letter be held ovef for future consideration. BoßOCGi^^iivoiE. T TheGeneralPurnoses Committee reported that they had given the subject o^ the appointment of a person residing in the vicinity of the reservoir as caretaker their careful consideration, and bad come to the conclusion that such an appointment was necessary. They recommended that Mr P. Aro be appointed, and that his remuneration be at the rate of £10 per annum.-Adopted. Wajotahi AQUEDtJCT.-Cr Jas. Brown directed attention to the state of the mouth of the Waiotahi aqueduct, which would inevitably result in the flooding;of surrounding property.-Referred to the General Purposes Committee. Other routine business was transacted, and the Council rose.
