OUR MINES.

ORLANDO. It is gratifying to be able to report that the reef at the low level shows an appreciable improvement. When breaking it down to-day some splendid mineral indications were observed in the hangingwall portion of the lode, while good colors of gold were also seen distributed through the quartz. The country is a favorable channel of sandstone. NEW AI.BURNIA.. The prospects of this company's mine cannot be regarded as otherwise than en^ couraging. It is true that up to the pre.r sent the precious metal has not been observed in the quartz broken out from Dixon's reef on the western drive at the 70ft level, but for all that the lode is of a most' promising appearance, having opened out to nearly sft in width, and being .composed of black, heavily mineralised ore. In the leading stope over this drive the reef looks really well, and besides the fact that colors of g,pld have been seen pretty well distributed fchrough^he quartz, a few pounds of picked stone have also been selected from the general dirt. Crushing i 9 to be at once proceeded with at the Cambria battery. VICTORIA. There is nothing of importance to chronicle from this mine. Thp recent crushing of 16 loads of quartz and a small parcel of'picked stone, from the hangingwall reef in the slopes below the 160 feet level, produced Slozs 13dwis melted gold. NEW MOANATAIRI. A good deal of consternation was caused to-day when it became known that a serious "creep" or subsidence of ground had occurred in this company's mine which necessitated the temporary suspension of operations. The following telegram on the subject was posted at the Corner from the manager (Mr Gr. S. Clark) :— " Heavy creep of ground in the workings oo thp |#Oft and Point Russell levels. I Have suspended si) ppsratjons fi!} }t settles." The subsidence, wtyifsh js ■ p,f a somewhat serious extent, is to be regretted, but 3£r Clark is doing everything possible in the £njtere§ts 9! $he shareholders, uader the circumstances. TAPU Mr McMahon has brought up a trial parcel of ore from the recent new find at Tapu for treatment, The ore is of excellent quality and a handsome yield is expected". •

r~^' Sylvia; . A bailiff, on behalf of the Bank of New Zealand, yesterday took possession of this company's plant at Tararu. It is almost unnecessary to say that universal sympathy is expressed for the company in the trouble that has overtaken it, but it is sincerely to be hoped that at an early date a reconstruction will take place, as the property is well worthy of being thoroughly and systematic- [ ally developed. WAIHI. Tenders are invited in another column by Mr Barry, receivable up till noon on the 20th inst., for sinking a winze in the Union mine. Specifications may be seen at the office of the company.
