CONSOLATION TO CAPITALISTS.

(To the Editor of the Evening Stab.)

Sir,—l observe that of late your Auckland newspapers are over-loaded with the whirlings of land grabbers, about the hardship of the unfortunate canitatists being forced to the uncalatable process of self-banishment. Now, sir, to strip this important subject of its surface surroundings, I would ask those unfortunate grumblers to directly answer this plain question— " Whether this new truly excellent country should continue locked up in the firm grasp of a few capitalists— ■— land grabbers, rather than bsing divided into suitable farms, and, on easy terms, placed in the possession and immediate occupation of the industrious cultivators of the soil ?" Again, should those selfbanished and unfortunate capitalists return and re visit—say io a few years— this colon y, sad find the land so divided and peacefully occupied by many thousand industrious families quietly in the fuli occupation and enjoyment of their own happy homes; I ask, would such a drastic change still prove the source of continued grief to the present questionable grumblers ? But, sir, perhaps I bad better stop, as I fear that such plain questions may prove more unpalatable than edifying to some of your readers.™ I remain, sincerely ever, an old Thamesito,

J. C. MacLeod

Opotiki, April 11th.
