In the course of the proceedings of the Borough Council last nighfc the Mayor, on behalf of the Committee appointed some time ago for the purpose, submitted a plan of the proposed additions and alterations to the Borough Chambers, and said he estimated that the cost of the whole building, including an iron railing, would be about £700. The Mayor moved that the plan should be referred to a committee of the • whole Council, so that it could be carefully considered, and members could freely express their views on the subject, and offer suggestions as to any improvements which might be effected. Or Comer seconded the proposition, which was carried unanimously. The proposal is that a new one-storey wooden building 40ft x 36ft should be erected on a good brick foundation, at a suitable distance from the ground ; the heightfrom the pavement will be 30ft, and from floor to ceiling 18ft. The main entrance will be from Albert street, —though it is proposed to have a corner entrance as at present —while the front will be nicely corniced. The frontage to Albert street will be 40ft, and on entering the 7ffc hall the Chambers will be on the left-hand side, and 35ffc s 17ffc, jn the clear, with brick . chimney therein. On the opposite side will be the Collector's room 14ft x 13ft, and the Town Clerk's room 14ft x 14ft, with a double brick chimney between the two, and then a strong room 14ft x Bft, in which to keep the records of the Council. It is proposed to utilise the present structure, and tutn it round so that the present face will front Queen street, and this will be set apart for Mayor's, Committee's, and Engineer' 3 rooms. As mentioned by the Mayor last night, it might be considered advisable to make certain alterations in the plan as submitted, but it was desired to have the new building four feet back from the pavement, raised from the ground so that steps would be necessary, and enclose the structure in an iron»railing feuce.

A little boy named W. Walsh, son of Mr J. H. Walsh, butcher, of Owen street, had the top of the second finger of his right hand cut •ff yesterday by a sausage machine. He was taken to Dr. Callan's, where his injury was attended to.
Mr E. Durand, a new arrival amongst us, although an old colonist, has commenced, business in Brown street as a pork butcher. Those of us who are fond of the many toothsome delicacies to be generally obtained at establishments of this kind should at once pay Mr Durand a visit, as his goods are of the choicest quality. Mr Durand also announces that he is a cash purchaser of dairyfed pigs.
With reference to the letter recently received by the Borough Council from the Commissioner of Police providing for the sorvicc of a member of the force as a registrar under the Dog Registration Act, if required, it was last night recommended by the Finance Committee, " That as a large proportion of the fees for the registration of dogs for the current year has been collected, the present Registrar should remain in office, and that he should be empowered to recommend to the Council a proper person to be appointed to seize and confine collarless dogs." With respect to the application of Mrs E. Keven that her rates should be remitted on the grounds of extreme poverty, the Committee also recommended: " That the application be granted so far as relates to rates due for the year 1889-90." Both recommendations were adopted.
