Wellington, Last night. NDMBER OF PEIVATE SCHOOLS.

It will surprise most people to learn that there were last year 293 private schools in the coloDy (including Anglican and Eoman Catholic), with 13,418 scholars. This was a falling off of six schools and 395 scholars as compared with the previous yea EOLL F THE LOBDS CALLED. Out of 39 members of the Legislative Council, 32 were present when the special "call" was made to-day, and the other seven were accounted for either by leave of absence or illness. ME HUTCHINSON'S CHARGES AGAINST MINISTERS. MR MITCHELSON TO MOVE FOR A COMMITTEE. The Government claim that Mr G. HutchiDson is now anxious to shirk the enquiry into his charges against the Ministers. At any rate he is raising. difficulties in the way of fixing the personnel of the Committee, and Mr Mitchelson intends, when moving for a com* mittce, to claim from the House a right to be relieved from his imputations.

ME CADMAN WANTS TO KNOW.

Mr Cadman is moving for a return showing the pensions paid to Customs officers duriDg the last three years, and also tho particulars of the duties of tho Consulting Engineer resident in London. THE FINANCIAL DEBATE. The financial debate was considerably enlivened to-night by Sir George Grey's vigorous attack upon Sir John Hall. The Auckland Knight has not shown so much anger for a long time.

FEDERAL CONFERENCE N.Z. DELEGATES. The representatives of New Zealand at

the Federal Conference will be five members of the Lower House and two of the Legislative Council, but the names have not yet been decided.
