Election Notes.
(Peb Pbess Association*)
Wellington, Last night. A well-known firm of solicitors he ye been asked by a telegram from Auckland their opinion as to the legality of one of the Auckland elections It is alleged that in the case in question the returning officer . ccepted the nomination of one candidate without receiving a deposit of £10, and the opinion is asked whether the election is not null and void. The name of the electorate has not been made public. This day. The state of parties is yet a-matter of much speculation, though the - uncertainty only applies to the extent of the Opposition majority. One of the evening papers claims 53 rotes for the Opposition, and 40 for the Government, and ranks two as doubtful, while another thinks there are 70 members returned distinctly on the Opposition side, 32 distinctly on the Ministerial aide, and 12 who are independent. It suggests that the Government is likely to ba defeated on a no-confidence motion by about 18 votes. Dunedin, This day. Sir R. Stout has received telegrams from Major Atkinson and other leaders of the Opposition sympatnising with him in losing his seat Major Atkinson urged him to reconsider his decision to retire.
