If a Frenchman wishes to drink the waters of Alsace he has first to obtain permission from the German Government. An actress who recently asked for this permission has received no answer, the cause for this peculiar beliftviour, it is thought, is that the lady's name is Mdlle. Boulanger! A leaf of the giant water lily (Victoria Begia) has been known to measure 24ft 9fin in circumference, its weight being nearly 141bs. One of the flowers was 4ft 2in in circumference, with petals 9in in length, arid weighing 3|lbs. All the leading, papers of Berlin hare published apparently inspired articles ad rising the financial world to stop lending money to Russia, and follow the example of England and Holland, which have uuloaded their Russian securities. A French paper points out that the passion for gambling is so great in England that even in wedding notices it is necessary to state that there are "no cards," in order to put a check upon the national tendency, to gamble upon all occasions.
