In the ease of Hugh M.Brooks,alias Maxwell, under sentence of death in St. Louis, Mo., for the murder of Preller, a writ of error has been obtained from Justice Miller, of the United States Sup* reme Court, and the execution stayed. Brooks's father had arrived from T£ngu land, and declares b^e will more heaven and earth to save his son Hugh, whom he bclieTes more unfortunate than criminal. The people of St. Louis,are incensed at what they call " Legal tricks" in Brooks's ea«e, after he has been fairly tried and n con?icted. A great meeting to protest against the proclamation of the land league was hold in Dublin on the 22nd August, presided over by Professor Galbraith, a Protestant. It was one of the largest demonstrations •—not excepting the O'Connell-Steele gathering at Clontarf—erer held in Ireland. The delegation of English members of the House of Commons consisted of Jacob Bright, Manchester ; Richard Burden Haldane, Haddiogton; John Edward Ellis, Nottinghamshire ; Charles Fenwick, Northumberland; and Angus 'Sutherland, Sutherland. This deputation il said to be only an earnest of what the Liberal English members are prepared to do if the Coercion Act is going to be Worked with tigonr. The members are going to Ireland later on to address meet* ings, to be present at eviction*, and sit as good lookers-on in courts where coercion magistrates will exercise summary jurisdiction.
