MAIL NEWS.

The population of Great Britain is increasing at the rate of 1000 per day. The drought was so severe in Ireland that the river Shannon could be crossed almost dryshod.

The following advertisement appeared in a Liverpool daily paper: " A lady who loves Christ wishes to meet a gentleman who loves him too. Address, ,

Mercury Office." Although Mr Whiteley, tbe great London storekeeper, lost over half a million in his last fire in Westbourne Grove, he was out with an advertisement in the papers saying that business was proceeding in every department as usual. There was a total eclipse of the sun on August 19th, the line of totality passing across Asia and Europe. In Berlin the occulation as seen was preceded by deeply colored clouds. The eclipse was not observed at St. Petersburg, owing to the clouded condition of the sky. At Klin the sun was obscured, but the aged Professor, named Mendeliff, made a balloon ascension alone, so as lo get above the clouds and take observations. As there had been a hitch in filling the balloon, there was considerable doubt ai to.its ability to carry the aeronaut, but the ascension was successfully made, and the Professor descended safely near Moscow, forty miles distant.
