National Bank Robbery.
Melbourne, June 24.
In the City Police Courf, Thomas Millidge, Alfred Ringiil, John Alcoek, and George Fortune were charged with having robbed, under r.rins, t&e Simpson's Road branch of the National Bank ; and Thomas McMahon was charged with having aided and abetted. Eingill, alias Yates, who was admitted as Queen's evidence, said that the robbery had been planned in. consequence of the information received by Millidge of the habits of Mr Humphreys, manager, from a marine store dealer, who suggested it. It was first pro* posed that the bag be snatched from Mr Humphreys as he was carrying it to or from the bank; but as he carried a revolver, and might use it, this plan was abandoned. They then arranged that the premises should be entered, and the robbery effected as was subsequently carried out. At 4 o'clock on the morning of the robbery the three prisoners entered the premises. Riogill went for McMahon's cart, for the use of which it had been previously arranged that McMahon should get £2 if the project miscarried, and £40 if it proved successful. Bingil! accord* ingly drove the cart up at the time, and met his accomplices as they left the bank. They theu proceeded to Studly Parlr, where, after having given Millidge £50 for the man who suggested the robbery, and £40 to McMahon, the plunder was divided. Having thrown their revolvers into the Yalrra, at the Johnson street Bridge, they separated. Hingill, on being arrested, confessed to the crime, and gave information leading to the recovery of a portion of the plunder at Coburg. Altogether, out of the sum of £1000 which was stolen, £600 or £700 have been recovered. Eingill only came out of Pentridge in February last, and since then he has consorted with the prisoners. The case was adjourned.
