The figures furnished by the promoters of the work would chow that very material advantages are attached to its carrying out, and if all the reports on it be fruitful in results, the work will undoubtedly be of value to the higher levelß of the field, nnd at to-night's meeting a full explanation of the work will be given. To-night's meeting is a statutory one, and the benefits to be shown at it, to those within the rating district, will enable them to decide upon the meiits of the case. It will be reniombered by our readers that a few months ago some little commotion was caused amongst the natives at Parawai on account of two young Maori men violating the sanctity of the matrimonial rights of a well known chief. A native committee sat, and punished those infringers of domestic laws by fining them. In one case a promissory note was given by the delinquent, and this on falling due was not met. The chairman of the committee which sat in judgment as holder of the note consequently took Bdion in the B.M. Court this morning to recover the amount of it—£3o. When the ca»e was called on in due course, it was found that it was defended, and in order to obtain the attendance of a Native Assessor to eit with the B.M. at the hearing, it was adjourned until Friday next.

An American paper thus compliments a Yankee pilot:—lt might be said cf Captain Scboonhaven, of the steamer Helvetia, which was wrecked on Saturday, as was said of Mark Twain, that be would make a good pilot if he was only given steamboats enough. This was his first trip out eicce the wrecking of the Daniel Steinmaun, and the loss of two vessels in two consecutive trips is keeping up a pretty fair average.
A veby simple test for watered milk consists in a polished knitting-needle. This is dipped into a deep Teasel of milk and immediately withdrawn in an upright position. A DESTBiTCTiVB agricultural enemy is thus reported on from California:—Tbo Santa Roea Democrat says that the Hessian fly lias made its appearance again in the whom fields south of that city, and is doing rauoh damage. Robert Crane says one of his fields has already been destroyed by them, and other farmers report them -very bad. The fly last year made its nppearanoe in Suisun Valley. We had a conversation with Matthew Osok about the Hrs«ian ly, and he fays that it travels slowly, but that great precaution must be used against it. Where it once finds lodging, it stays. A country dependent entirely on wheat would be in a very bad coadiliou if the fly should once get in. It is to be hoped thul like the Oodlin moth there is no danger of this pest being imported into this colony.
