The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1885.

The recent visit to the Thames of the Hon. W. J. M. Larnach, Minister of Mines, is already producing good fruit. In our last issue we were enabled to publish the information that the plans and specifications for the repairs to the Kocky Point Eoad. had been approved of, and that Government would grant £200 as promised for the work. In addition to this comparatively small item on the list of the district's requirements, several others met with the very favorable consideration of the Minister during his brief stay here, and many other promises -of aid were given; but some of them will have to pass through the ordeal of a critical examination by the House when the Estimates are under review by its members. The very friendly interest taken in our affairs generally, and in fairly going into our wants, and the best means of their redressal, which both Mr Larnach and his colleague, Mr Ballance, evinced, should encourage the people generally in the belief that many of our long neglected requirements should not be allowed to remain in {abeyance; more especially in those cases where promises —some of them qualified—have been recorded. Those more particularly interested in certain works should adopt this time and hour and keep the many local wants well before the Powers that be ; if they allow them to remain dormant the chances are they will never be attended to; whereas in the present case of a friendly desire existing to do justice to the district, every advantage should be taken of it, and that can easily be done without any unreasonable demands being made. We would again urge those who have been instrumental in placing the list of necessary aids to the development of the field before the Ministry, not to relax their efforts, but to place themselves in communication with the district's members with a view to pressing their respective cases on to a sue* cessful issue.
