INVERCARGILL.
Yesterday. The bakehouse, stable, harness, and horses of J. E. Blnck, Winton, were destroyed by fire at 1 o'clock this morning.
Mr Lockbart, manager of the Orepuki Coal and Shale Company, who was injured while coming up the shaft last week, died at Biverton last night. The Irish Tolunteer Corps have been informed by the Minister of Defences that as hostilities are now improbable, Government will merely accept the services of the new corps as honorary. The members have decided to offer their services on that footing. The Minister in his letter expressed gratification at.the public spirit which prompted the offer. In the Police Court to-day, James Mabin, a run*holder of Yonmore, was charged on remand with having attempted to set fire to some stacks on the farm of a settler named O'Donnell. After further evidence had been taken as to the character of the prosecutor, the Bench dismissed the information, holding that a prima facie case had not been made out. They considered that Mabin's witness had proved that he was away at the time on the dale when he was said to have been seen at the stacks, and also pointed out that Q'Donnell's evidence was uncorrobo-. rated.
