NAPIER.

This day.

Afc a meeting of the Waste Lands Bo&rd yesterday, on the motion of Gapt. Russell, the following resolution was carried:—"That the increase of rabbits ia the vicinity of Tautane Block, now being surveyed and opened up by roads for settlement, will materially fdiminish the price the land will sell for when put up to auction, and possibly prevent any bidding for it, unless a rabbit fence is erected on the southern boundary of the Crown lands in Hawke's Bay district, and the Waste Lands Board there recommends Government to grant pound for pound in aid of the erection of a rabbit fence, to be erected on a most suitable line in the vicinity of the boundary, and failing the erection of the fence, the Board is of the opinion that any further expenditure in surveys, and roads will be useless, and should therefore be discontinued.

The vital statistics for August are as follows :—Births, 51; marriages, 6; deaths, 14. Customs returns, £2853; beer duty, £206. A man named George Ness, a fellmonger at Kaikora, was missing on Thursday evening. His employer and others went in search of him __ on the hills, as he had appeared to be in a desponding state of mind lately, his usual regular remittance not having arrived by last mail from Aberdeenshire, where his relatives occupied a wealthy position. Yesterday afternoon the man's body was discovered in a hole in the Kaikora Creek, with an old iron pump tied on his back.
