DUNEDIN.
This day. At the City Police Court Elizabeth Tattersall was charged with larceny when a bailee. She hired a sewing machine from a depot, paying half-a-crown instalment, and at once pawned it. The cas» was brought as a test one. The Bench sentenced her to a month's imprisonment. Several deputations waited on the Minister of Public Works to-day. He gave them satisfactory assurances that it is the intention of the GoTernment to proceed with the Otago central railway. He caused great ronsternation by informing the members of the Dock Trust that the whole lower harbor reserves, which the Trust looked upon as their endowment bad been already proclaimed as reserves for railway purposes. Burkes brewery, owned by Dalgetty and Co. was burned down this morning. Insurances not stated.
Later. ■The buildings and; plant were insured for £SCO in the following offices: —Hamburg, Magdeburg, Scottish, Imperial, Australian Alliance; South British, NewZealand, Colonial, and United. The place was leased by Richard Whitingham, malster, whose stock was insured. He loses about £4CD. The origin of, the fire is unknown, but was probably occasioned by sparks from a passing; train.
