Parliamentary Notes.

Wellington, Last night.
The Public Petiiions Committee report in the case of W. Littlejohn and others, of Ohinemuri, asking for land to be taken for a road to Paeroa, that the}' have no special recommendation to make to the Government.
The following is the report of the Public Petitions Committee of the Legislative Council on the petition of James Farrell: —That, taking the prayer of the petitioner into consideration, also the very high testimonials of the valuable and lengthened service rendered by him, they are of opinion that if the petitioner were reinstated in the public service, an act of grace would be performed which would in no way be prejudicial to the efficiency and discipline of the police force. This day. There is much dissatisfaction among Southern men about the steam service vote being reduced to £20,000 a year, Macandrew saying the vote is worthless. But the fact is. if the New Zealand Shipping Company can run boats for £30,0C0 a year to protect their own interests, they can do so for £20,000 a year. There is little chance of the vote being increased, as the Ministry are not at all very eager for the service, Atkinson and Johnston, I hear, being the most zealous. Bryce's Amnesty Bill, I am told, does not includes the names of any persons, i but gives the Governor power, by proclamation, to condone offences of persons by publication in the Gazette of the names.
The Public Petitions Committee will recommend, it is understood, that the engine drivers' petition for an increase of pay be considered; also that the prayer of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company for a monopoly of the railway goods shed at Lyttelton will not be recommended.
Brogden takes his case to the Privy Council. Hall, Macandrew, and Pollen, I am told, fought hard for him, and that the Committee only carried the report by. a majority of one.
