Electoral. TO THE ELECTOBS OF THE THAMES. f*i ENTLEMEN.—I have just perused \JC : :■■■ ■, ■'■ a letter to you published by Mr Speight. Mr Speight has built up a house of cards for the mere pleasure of knocking it down. I asserted that when Mr Speight came up to Auckland to stand for City East that I did assist him in helping to pay the expenses entailed by his election. I repeat that statement. I was asked to contribute distinctly, and specially on Mr Speight's behalf. The Committee had no claim on me otherwise, as I was paying the whole of my own expenses, and also assisting other candidates. Mr Speight quotes from a report further to this effect—" He (Mr Sheehan) had frequently assisted Mr Speight since that time." If Mr Speight had been present at my meeting he would have seen at once that I was not speaking of monetary assistance, as I referred to his being called upon to take part in moving the Address in Beply; and then went on to show that I had helped with advice and assistance in the various matters which he had brought before the House. Not a shilling has ever passed between Mr Speight and myself as the money was paid direct, to Mr KiDg, the Secretary and Treasurer of the Committee, and would not consequently appear in Mr Speight's " Bank Book." As I have already explained what was the nature of the assistance given to him after his election, it requires no further reference at my hands, but I will be prepared at my meetings of this evening and to-morrow evening to repeat what I said at Tararu last night. I think that Mr Speight instead of trying to throw dust in the eyes of the electors, and draw a red herring across the scent should .have devoted his : time to answer my allegation of his "■total want ofytarty good faith towards myself, and contradict if he can the statement made to £ me by Mr Yeale, one of his own supporters. I remain, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, J. SHEEHAN. TAURANGA ELECTION. T HAVE' just received the following telegram from Sis Geobge Gbey. Please insert it:-"To Wm. Kelly, Esq. Tauranga,—lt gives me great pleasure to hear of your prospects of success. Hope you get a good majority, as you will be a valuable addition to the -; Liberal Party.—(Signed) G. Gbey."— \ . • . Wm. Kelly.
