" The House has now been sitting continuously for twenty-three hours, and the Nelson members assisted by Messrs Seddon and Reeves are systematically stonewalling the Kepresentation Bill. It is with great difficulty a House can be kept together, and there is little hope of Government giving wuy, but the opposing party seem determined to obstruct the Bill at every stage. Several •_ little scenes have occurred." ISo wires our correspondent at 2.30 this afternoon. Since the days when Mr L. Eees had the honor of a seat in the House, and spoke for 24 hours, no such scene as appears to have been enacted last night has occurred, and it is to be hoped it will be many a day before such another takes place. Such attempts to prevent legislation are calculated to bring the Chamber into disrepute, and the members engaged in the work of stone-walling appear in anything but a favorable light. Yet such tactics are of late, days recognised, but if they continue beyond a reasonable length in our legislation, the Government will, in a measure, be driven to follow Mr Gladstone's policy, and amend the forms of procedure of the House. The loss of time and the cost to the country on the present occasion will be considerable, and but little good may be the result, for, as our correspondent says. Government are determined uot to be
coerced by a minority ot' the Houso. fight may, however, be looked upon as a trial^of strength, and if the obstructionists are uuable to carry their point under present circumstances, they may cease from troubling, aud the country may see the bill passed this session. There is evidently general discontent, or the majority of' the members would be able, if not by fafr^ble measures, yet by moral suasion, wpfeven^their colleagues from inflicting «o much discomfon, and unpleasantnessv^apon them. The latest telegram states the debate is being still continued. ;
