Thames Borough Council.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Thames Borough Council was held at the Council Chambers last night. Present— Crs McGowan (in the Chair), Wilkinson*: Osborne, Mennie, Marshall, Speight and Bawden.'
The minutes of the previous meeting I were, read and confirmed, and a precis of outward correspondence read over. LBTTIBB BBAD. From a number of the residents of Burke street; asking the Council to turn the water on in the stand-pipe, opposite' the Waiotahi Hotel.—Eeferred to Water Committee.—-From the secretary of the Orphanage asking the Council to bring the case of Mr Syvrett's child before the Government with a view to getting it admitted'into the Sumner Deaf and Dumb Asylum.—Cr Osborne moved and Cr Wilkinson seconded that the Town Clerk take the necessary steps to have the rrquest carried out. ■—From John Bead, J. E. Angove A. Gillan an others, staling that the railway crossing as left by the Engineer was useless in consequence of the mudhole at the approaches, and asking that steps be taken to have it made passable. - Beferred to Works Committee.—From Capt. Wildman, T.N.8., asking the patronage of the Council at. the Lucas Benefit performance.—From Mr Quint, calling attention to the state of the footpath in front of his premises.—From Mr £. Bertram, drawing attention to 1 an overcharge in his water rate. He has been 1 been .charged 6s 3d, instead of 4s 2d. Beferred to Water Supply Committee. A letter was received from-the Coroner (Mr Kenrick), giving the rider of the jury passed at the inquest on the recent fire in Willoughby street/ regarding the danger of permitting the existence of empty, dilapidated houses in various , portions of the Borough. Received. A treasury voucher for £2 Os 6d, fees, fines, etc., was received.
The secretary to the Treasury wrote in reply to the Thames local bodies claim for £22,415, alleged to have been wrongfully paid by the Government to the native owners of the goldfield. The writer was directed by the Treasurer to state he:could not perceive; on, what grounds the claim was based nor could he recognise in the • public accounts the amount ■ mentioned. ';'■ Beferred to the joint Committee. " ' -' ' ' A letter was received from the Secretary ', to the Hauraki Pumping Association, stating that orders had been given to the manager to < pump to the 430 feet level, and soliciting the Borough's contribution: Letter« received: Several Councillors pointed out that the Council's part of the agreement was, that they should not contribute till'the water was down to the 400 feet level. A letter'was received from Mr It. N. Smith,; asking for a right of way through the,. Orphanage ground. Referred to Borough representatives on the Orphanage Committee. ,• A letter w»s received from a number of Brown street residents, drawing ettention to the necessity of providing an outlet for > the sewerage and stormwater from the I southern culvert in that street. Con-, sideration deferred.
A letter was received from the 8.V.P.8. covering a resolution to the effect that it was undesirable to amalgamate with the Grahamstown Brigade, but offering to meet the Council in their desire to effect retrenchment.—Beferred to the Fire Brigade Committee.
A letter was read from Mr A. Fleming, Borough Collector, regarding the decision of the Council not to pay commission on Water Supply moneys collected, and ask* ing the Council to reconsider that decision. He enclosed letters written to him on the different occasions on which his salary was increased.
After some discussion «he whole ques- > tion of salaries was referred to a sub< committee consisting of Crs Wilkinson,, Mennie, Osborne and Speight. A letter was received from the Auckland Publio Works Office asking a receipt {or the tramway rails, etc., to enable the* storekeeper to clese his books. - , «■* BEPOBT OF rOBEM AN OF,WOXKS. The report of this officer was reeeired. It suggested the purchase of a young horse t.i preferable to hiring one. The matter of the horse was referred to the Works Committee, and the report, as a whole was adopted. ... ' BBPOBT OP TUBKGDCK. The monthly report of the turncock was recei?ed; ' '■''■■■■ BBFOBT OF BELIEVING OFFICES. The report of the Relieving Officer showed that during the month the ration, list h<«d been larger than for a lor* time* past. . . INBPECTOB OF SIAtTGHTEBHOTTSES. The quarterly report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses showed an increase in the slaughter, returns. \ , . „', , Cr Marshall drew the attention of the ' Council to the bad state of Baillie sireet, and mored the reference of the ma;ter to the Works Comniittee.—Carried. The Council then adjourned. .
