R.M. COURT, COROMANDEL.
(Before H. Kenrick, Esq., R.M.) THE ELECTOBAL BOIL. 84 claims for enrolment were reoeired by the Registrar of Electors, Mr A. J. Allom, on the 3rd May from Coromandel. It appeared evident to the Registrar that the majority of signatu 'es of claimants were forgeries. 6of tiiem on
further inquhy were proved to be good, and 38 were found votes already placed on the roll. 2 names were subsequently placed on the roll independent of. the applications referred to upon evidence satisfactory to the Registrar. The remaining 38 were brought before theR.M. Court at Coromandel by summons to prove their claims under Section 9 of the Act.
After 36 claims were proved to be forgeries, and 2 were adjourned in order that the Registrar might produce the attesting witnesses. The Resident Magistrate made some severe remarks to the parties concerned, and pointed out that they had rendered themselves liable to prosecution for forgery, and the authorities might still tbiuk it desirable to take that step.
The Registrar did not see his way to ask for costs against the innocent parties whose names had been thus used, and the Resident Magistrate concurred with him. To order costs against them would inflict great injustice. But it would be for the Registrar to decide whether it was not his duty to take proceedings to recover for the Government the heavy expenses he had been put to in exposing this attempt to deceive him as Registrar of Electors. The expenses will be upwards of £20.
