WELLINGTON.

Last night. Reward for Services. Edward Toomath, of Wellington, lias been appointed a J.P. The claims of the following; persons hare been admitted as entitled to the New Zealand war medals for services rendered prior to December 31, 1866 :~F. H. Auderson, private, Auckland Volunteers; F. Belton, private Taranaki Military Settiers ; H. 6. Blackmore, ensign sth Waikato Begiment; W. Brooking, corporal Taranaki Volunteers; F. MeLelland, Hospital sergeant 2nd Waikato Begij meufc; F. Morrison, private Nnpier Volunteers; J. Smith, private 3rd Waikato Eeginient, aud J. N. Pope, private Taranaki Volunteers. The following officers hate been appointed :— i'aranaki Mounted Bifles—P. J. O'Carroll, Honorary Assistant Surgeon. Picton Bifle Bangers—o. W. A. T. Xenny to be Captain. The services of the New Zealand Torpedo Corps, the Mount Cook Rifle Cadet Corps, and the Oaraaru North School Bifle Cadet Corps have been accepted. Special rules under the Befjuktion of Mines Act, 1874, appear in the Gazette, also additions and alterations to the rates for the conveyance, delivery, and storage of goods, parcels, etc., on the New Zealand, railways. A deputation consisting of members from the West Coast of the Middle Island waited on the Government this morning for the purpose of ascertaining if ' they intend to go on with the railway and other public works on the West Coast. • The Hon. Minister for Public Works stated that the railway from Greymoulh to Grey Valley should be proceeded with as soon as possible. He also promised there should be no delay ia respect to other public works. Owing to the depression in trade one of the New Zealand s.s. steamers is being laid up for a month or so. There is a barque at the Heads supposed to be the Jane, 101 daya out from London. Kauaezanga Bridge. The following tenders wera received for the ELauaeranga bridge contract of the Thames-Waikato Bail way:—Accepted—A Watson, Auckland, £763. Declined—Auckland : J. McLean and Son £822, E. White £850, J. Brain £978, D. Henderson £957, Smith £1095. Grahanutown: B. N. Smith £1020, J. Macandrew £1071, W. Sims-£ll2O, W. Adams £1236, W. O'Brien £1191.
