THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, AUGUST 18, 1879.

Those Auckland members, who so precipitantly deserted the sinking Ministerial ship, will, we believe, have reason to regret their temerity. Doubtless when Messrs Hobbs, McMinn and OoYleftfthe Northern legion for the Southern phalanx they trusted that,, before they had again occasion to seek the suffrages of their de-: ceived constituents, they would be able to' perform some, political feat to mitigate the perfidious % enme) j-pif which they^wereguilty. These gentlemen went to the poll with Grey for fcheir watchword, and then availed themselves of their very first opportunity to; shipwreck the in-; terests of the - people ; they were! elected to represent. The' dissolution,! however, has thrown them out of their reckoning, and now, totally unprepared,! they have to meet the men whose trust! they hafe vjolated. Already, the |un has! commenced, ail wilL'bfe Bejen^byiSojar tele-l grams to-day. McMinn, the member for^ Waipa, who scrambled into Parliament over the head of a better man, has received a preliminary kick from a portion of his constituents in the form of a vote of censure, and' J. 8. 'Macfarlane, the member for Waitemata, has had a unanimous want of confidence motion passed against him. These two instances may be taken as an earnest of the reception the other anti-Grey members will receive. The electors of this provincial district are evidently thoroughly .roused, pnd determined that divided Auckland shall be a thing of the past. Electors should remember, no matter what may be the social qualities of candidates, if they are not prepared to support the liberal policy as enunciated by Sir George Grey, they are not fit and proper persons to sit in the new parliament as representatives of Auckland constituencies.
