THE KAITANGATA CALAMITY.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—Shall it be said that in a mining community like the Thames no public effort is to be made to raise funds for the many families left desolate by the terrible accident at the Kaitangata mine P Surely each one of us by some act of self-denial could save something to contribute ; and however poor as a community let us at at least show that our sympathies are with the bereaved, and our help according to our means. I cannot but think that if a public meeting were called, the people would respond.—Yours, &c, E.

Thames, Feb. 28th, 79.
