We want the railway to open up the country; the Auckland people want to see the railway a mere branch from the present main line through Waikato to Omahu, so as to divert the traffic of the Thames Valley from its natural outlet—the Hauraki Gulf, j The influences brought to bear in Auckland may be successful for a time, but eventually the claims of Thames will assert themselves; but if we do not use all lawful means to counteract the specious representations- of the Herald, \ and the machinations of that clique Which would have all political power directed, from Auckland, and all public expenditure so manipulated as to conduce to Aucklandl city's aggrandizement/the progress of this district will be indefinitely; retarded. The local bodies jmust keep on asking. The Governmentcknnot possibly; after the promise? made, resist the importunities of the Borough and County and, the representations of our representatives and others who know best liow this district ran be servecl, its, best interests promoted. If the,people are in earnest in this matter, and want to see the Tail way commenced from! this end, they must, disabuse their minds of the idea (if it ever possessed them) that the preient Mayor is the man to get the work done. Let them elect some one who works well with the County, and who stands well with the Government —• namely McCullou&h. T
