Soon after noon today it was known that the Thames Naval Crew had been unsuccessful in their competition at the Aucklaud Regatta—that is, not coming in first; the Mercury Bay crew being winners, tho Thames second. '

Yestehday afternoon, after the mid-day Service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Somerville, in response to nn invitation from that gentleman to hold a meeting to consider the advisability of forming a Young Men's Christian Association here, about forty persons mot at the Theatre Boyal. Pr. Somerville prt-sided, and addressed those present, urging tho necessity of stich an association. A provisional committee, consisting of the Revs. It. Laishley, J. T. Hinton, S. J. Nt-ill, 11. S. Buan, J. Nixon, Messrs Patterson, Pocock, Driver, J. Hudson and T. James, were appointed. There was a clean sheet at the R.M. Court this morning.

The Auckland Star of. last night says : Sir George Grey and the Native Minister will leave for the Waiknto on Wednesday morning by train, but will be accompanied only by a few officials, as the meeting with the Maori King is to be only a merely formal affair, and preparatory to a future meeting about two mouths hence. The meeting will take place at Kopua, a settlement on the Punui River, about four miles south of Alexandra; and the

proceedings will be of an entirely private | nature—only Sir George Grey, the Native Minister, Te Wheoro, Tawhiao, and one or t»vo of tho leading Kiugite chiefs being present:. The arrangements for the meet ing are in tho hands of To Wheoro. Sir George Grey, we understand, has received several invitations from Tawhioa to meet him, and the last, received recently, was of a very precsing character. In his letter Tr.rchiao refers to the men of the old days vrho have passed away, and to weep over iiio'r memory. I
