THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1878.

Dubing the recent viaifca of Sir George Grej and the Hon. J. Sheehan, the Thames and Waikato Etilway was more than onco referred to, both in the speeches of tho Hon.. the Premier and his colleaguo, and incidentally on the occasion of the second visit of Ministers, and as both Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehan expressed themselves favorable to the project, there should not be any great difficulty in getting this work commenced much earlier than it can be if we are to wait for some special provision being made during next session of Parliament. We hear that Messrs T. and S. Morrin, whose offer to construct the line on certain conditions was considered by the County- Council some months ago, are still prepared to undertake the construction of the line, and that their conditions can be met under tho District Eailways Bill, the provisions of which have been previously explained. The Thames County and Borough would not be called upon to contribute the whole of the guarantee required. The Government contribute two per cent, per annum, and the Piako and Waikato Counties would be called upon to assist. But there is one thing to be noted. Under the District Bailways Bill companies may take the initiative in the matter, but it cannot be expected that Messrs Morrin will take these steps until they have their guarantee. It rests now with the local bodies and the ratepayers to say whether this railway shall be proceeded with expeditiously, or be left over till after next session in expectation of the Government doing something more than they can do now. In this direction, as in many others, this community would do well to follow the advice of Sir George Grey, and keep the matter before the Government by means of meetings, agitation and resolutions.
