It is intimated that a telegraph station is now open at Winslow, County of Ashburton. We regret; to learn that the vine disease known as " oidium tuckeri" has made its appearance in this district with disastrous results as "far as one small vineyard is concerned. A German settler at Mount Pleasant, near the cemetery road, whose vines were in a healthy state a few days ago, and who expected to be able to mnko from the produce BC3 gallons of wine, findi that the dreaded disease has made its appearance, and the vines now present the unmistakeable aspect of disease. The leaves are curled up and dry, as if smitten by a scorching wind; the stalks are covered with blotches of a reddish brown, and the bunches of grapes aro covered with a whitish substance, the young shoots and tendrils being withered. We arc informed that the attack on this one vineyard is general, and tho crop totally destroyed, so tho loss will be a serious one to tho owner. The application of pulverised sulphur has been found to be efficacious in the prevention and euro of this disease. Hydrosulphato of lime has also been applied with beneficial effect. Tine growers should look to their plants, as a timely use of the above or other remedies may be tho means of averting an attack of the disease.
