THAMES ANNUAL RACES.
First Day at Tararu.
The first day of the Thames Race meeting took place at Tararu in accordance with the result of a " toss," between the Parawai and Tararu stewards which placed the choice of days at the disposal of the latter. The day, luckily, was fine, and great numbers of pleasure-makers availed themselves of the occasion to make an excursion to Tararu, whifch they did by the usual 'busses and cabs, and also by the tramway carriages, which were put in requisition for the occasion, and took down several loads of visitors. Tararu Gardens formed a sort of grand stand, . capacious enough to satisfy _ everyone, and from which a good view of the course all the way round could be obtained. The new course was in as good condition as one could expect considering the natural difficulties of the ground, though, as might be expected, from the late rains, the going was somewhat heavy. From 10 o'clock the tide of pleasure seekers set in a steady stream towards Tararu, and as the day grew on was considerably increased by a large cargo brought down by the Hauraki, which arrived from Auckland at 12 o'clock The first race was fixed for 1 p.m., and about that time Titiko's Jockey (ftowden) weighed in, Mr Mcßoberts however being absent. The gentleman who was acting for him scratched the Belle, consequently the first race resulted as under :— Flying Stakes. Weight for age; 20 soys.; distance, one mile. Mr Bobbett's . Titiko, 4 yrs., Bst. 9lbs., purple, white sash, and black cap (Rawdon) walked over ... ... 1 Mr Mcßobert's The Belle, 4yrs., Bst. 91b. rose jacket and black cap (Hudson) drawn. ... ;. 2 This was sell No. 1. Sell No. 2 was not far off. The second race was as follows. Pabawai Plate : (Handicap) 50 soys. Distance, 2' miles. Mr Bobbet's Titiko, 4 yrs, Ist 91bs., purple and white sash and black cap (Rawden) ... ... ... 1 Mr Macßoberts' The Belle, 4 yrs, Bst 71bs, rose jacket and black cap ... 2 Mr Walters' Medea, 4 yrs, Bst, rose and white stripes ... ... ..... 0 The horSes were despatched to a beautiful start, Titiko taking the lead closely followed byjMedea, the Bells last, they were not doomed, however, to go very far at least at racing speed. Titiko disappeared in an unseemly mire which was somewhere near the centre. Medea ran inside a post, and the Belle alone continued the running into the straight the first time past the judge. The other two horses were pulled up and the Belle cantered round the course. On entering the paddock however Mr Walters the owner of Medea hearing opinions pretty freely expressed that the Belle also had gone inside the post, entered a protest against her on that ground, accompanied by the usual deposit of £1. A meeting of the stewards was held, and after the-evidence of Messrs McGuire", Akey, Morris Carey, the jockey of Ti iko, J. Coinor, Hales Thomas, Williams and Leonard, had been taken, it was decided that the protest be entertained. The manager of the Belle declined to allow her to run again, and so ended sell No 2, as far as the public were concerned. The evidence we are. bound to say was of a very conflicting character. As our reporter was leaving Titiko and Medea were about to run the race over again.
