GOLDEN CALF.

The prospects of this company may be said to be in the ascendant owing to the careful exploration of the mine and adjoining workings by the manager, Mr JJunlop. Driving on the course of the lode INo. 2 has improved since the slide has been met with; a little gold being to hand, as well as on No. 1 since the junction has been fairly passed. The most encouraging feature however is, that the shot of gold formerly worked in the Otago with profit, even as high as 3 ounces to the ton, is in a fair way of being recovered. This arises from the fact that in the Otago workings the drive, 100 feet above the low level, was not pushed into the boundary for the purpose of backing up the water accumulated in the Golden Calf some four feet above. The Golden Calf pushed in their drive to the Otago boundary, but failed to strike the gold. A winze had been sunk by the Otago Company from the upper level to the present low level, and Captain Richards put in a cros3-cut from the winze about midway to. the boundary without meeting the ex-f pected shot of gold. Permission has been granted to use this winze and cross-cut for the purpose of extending it into the Calf ground, where within 30 feet it is expected to meet with the gold, as by careful survey and exploration it is manifest that the belt of gold bearing stone within No. 2 reef strikes the Calf boundary at the very points hitherto left unworked. There will be 50 feefe of backs to this intermediate level, upon which operations are now in hand, as well as upon the lode in the opposite or north-eastern direction.
