The illustrations and letterpress are Very good. •:•■.. ;■ ■::>;;•.;;•:■..:■■, ••' y'' J-\ [: .'■ At the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand f on Saturday night, the Rev. Mr McGowan, of Lyttelton, was elected moderator. Mr H. R. Webb addressed the electors at Lyttelton on Saturday night, and explained his action in supporting the Abolition and Local Government Bills. They provided ample means for local government. He was in favour of runs letting at a valuation to existing tenants when their present,leases expired. He advocated free and compulsory education, and opposed manhood suffrage. He defended the action of the Government in the Piako Swamp sale. A vote of thanks was passed for his address. A very unpleasant religious squabble is now going on at Kaiapoi between the Rev. Mr Carlyoh, Episcopalian minister; and his flock. The former;-is charged with strong tendencies- to the Roman Catholic Church," and distributing objectionable pamphlets to young' children. A commission of enquiry is sitting. A bowling club has just been established here.
