"VIATOR " AND THE THAMES SCHOOL.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sir, —In "Viator's" report on the Thames School I read—" When the present master, Mr Moore, took charge of it the ' numbers in attendance were only about 70 pupils, comprising both sexes, &c." Now I should hare thought that Mr Moore would spurn to have his reputation bolstered up by such a misrepresentation. It might be possibly true that on the day that Mr Moore took charge there were a very fewpupils present, but if I mistake not . Mr b-oodwm s last average daily attendance for the quarter was 129, We all know that the schools were nearly emptied by the measles and other, complaints, bufc that is not a fair time to take for comparison. .. I have no doubt but that Mr Goodwin will set us right (if ho thinks it worth while) when he sees such an attempt to exalt another at his expense. I am happy to say that ho is doing^ extremely well at Taurauga, ' Viator' is rcrp minute, but he omits to : state that Mr Moore recently-got rid of

an assistant whom Mr Goodwin tolerated probably from motives of charity. I was chiefly on account of continued attempts to puff up a new man, that Mr Goodwin (a hard working conscientious teacher) became disgusted with the Thames. These puffs, are worthless and unfair to other schools; if comparisons are made, (as in " Viator's " first letter), let them be made by "competitive examinations. Who ii '■' Viator P" _ and what does he think is his. special mission?—l am, &c,

Anti-Humbug
