MACKATTOWN. , November 12th! ' The MiningJDistricts Act. ZhiUio Meeting'

A public meeting, convened for the purpose of petitioning His" Honor the Superintendent 1 to' bring the Goldmining Districts Act; 1873, and its Amendment Act, 1875, into immediate operation, was held at. Hayman's Boyat Mail Hotel. There was a large attendance of miners and others interested, and 1 the principal claims.of the district were represented,, Mr W. McCloughen was voted to the chair, and in opening remarked that he ; would not take up the time of the meeting, but .{would, at once call upon Mr A. Porter, as convener, to state the~ business, and

hit views on the subject. Mr Porter said that most of those present may remember that shortly after the opening of the field,a meeting was held for the same purpose for which they had now met, viz., that of haring some more secure and better title to ground than that given by miners' rights. He was still of the same opinion as then, that it would be for -the. benefit of the miner and the district * if the Act" of 1873, as at present in force at the Thames had been brought into operation" here. It would have given a more secure title and greater inducements to capitalists to invest and erect machinery than the Act of 1860, under which we .are now-working He believed that the objection's urged at that time against its introduction liave since been removed "by" the passing of an Amendment Act, reducing the areas to be occupied from thirty to live acres, which amendment he believed would give-general satisfaction. He then explained the clauses of the Amended Act, and desired the meeting tot>e unanious in supporting the following resolutions :— " * "

1. That this meeting is of opinion that it would be for the benefit o£ this district if the Gold-Mining;^Districts Act, 1873, and its amendment 6f 1875 were brought into immediate operation. 2.
