PAEROA/
1.30 p.m. Mr McLaren, District Engineer, arrived here yesterday for the purpose of inspecting the various tracks which have been discovered to the Waitekauri District. He intended to have gone over the Paeroa—Dan Leahy's course—in the afternoon in accordance with previous arrangement, and stayed air Waitekauri for the night, but none of the committee residing at Paeroa could be found with courage enough to venture to accompany him. He therefore proceeded to Mackay-' town, and ,started via the Mackaytown course th*|£morning --Jn_ company; with Sub-Inspector Newall md' a representative of our, respected townsman Mr MeOloughen. He will remain at Waitekauri and- complete his official^ business connected with water races and machine site", and return by Baeroa—Waitekauri course—so as to form a correct notion as to which is the best for the conveyance of the heavy machinery- in Waiting for that district.
The recent discoveries have' given a great impetus to the Waitekauri district, and two more machines of 26 stampers each are spoken of as likely to be erected and in work as soon as the Waitekauri Company's. .
Now that the necessary authority has been received from Sir George Grey to proceed with the formation of the road. I have no doubt but that the work will be proceeded with and carried out expeditiously, as soon as the Engineer findswhich is the!'best tractjuid reports. There is, therefore, something in view for your unemployed to look forward to.
Electioneering feelings are beginning to trouble the. minds of ourj political enthusiasts here, and at no time is tha* ieeling more strongly displayed than during bad weather—of which we have had three days here. Various candidates are spoken of and discussed —amongst them Messrs A. J. Thorpe and Peter Austin. We want a representative who has some interest in this district or we will be neglected altogether.
The bad weather has prevented me from visiting Waitekauri as I intended, and it looks as if it would prevent me for another day or two—the Court day on the 4th will bring in a good many—when you may look for all details.
. There are about 400 miners there now.
