MR BRIDGES MAKES A PER SONAL EXPLANATION.

The following letter appeared in yes terdays Cross in reply to some statements made in the New Zealand Herald:—

Mb Bbidges and the New Zealand

Hebaid. [by telegbaph.]

To the Editor: Sir,—Will you be good enough to give me room in your journal for the following brief reply to a recent article in the Auckland Herald which contains a number of falsehoods resJ>ecting myself. 27 years ago, I resided or a short time in Auckland; but I- was never a clerk in Captain Kelly's office, although an intimate friend of that gentleman. I was never in any other position in the Bank of New Zealand than that of Wellington manager; and for many years before that institution came into existence, I had been a bank manager in Australia and this colony, in banks of higher character than the Bank of New. Zealand will ever attain. I made "ho solicitation whatever when recently in London to be placed on the directory there, but was induced by the promise of such a position to decline an offerbf a'valuable appointment in a rival bank, and when that appointment was filled up, the promise Wfis broken in a base and treacherous manner by Mr Thos. Russell, who was acting on behalf of the Bank of New Zealand. The other statements^ in the article have no better foundation in truth and are too contemptible for notice.— "Sour obedient servant, J. Bridges.
