Ohinemuri.

(FBO3I A COBRESPONDENT.)

October 21.

The population is increasing here day by day; all hands are looking anxiously for the amended Act of Sir George Grey to come into force in this district. Several of the abandoned claims have been applied for by old hands who have faith in the district. Much more could be taken up if there was a less expensive way of holding the ground than by Miners' Eights. Little work is at present going on at the Karangahake, as the claim-holders are waiting to see what the battery folks are going to do. On the other side of the river, some claims have resumed work, on the expiry of their protection. In the Waitekauri there are niauy strangers, in addition to the old hands;

plaints have been laid to obtain possession of shares in the new rush on tne ground of non-working, and there is likelihood of busy times for the lawyers. Several applications have been put in for water rights at Waitekauri. • Our farmers are beginning to say that fifty acres is rather small, that 200 acres would be much better. Ohinemuri will one day be the finest part^of the Province. The land is good, arid the reefs only require machinery todevelope their value, and employ a large population ; but this will not be done if the policy of the Thames Advertiser is followed to spend the £10,000 on the road from Puriri to Tairua —the roads in the Ohinemuri district are quite os important. The first ball of the season came off on Thursday evening, the youth and beauty of Mackytovvn keeping up the festivity till the small hours of the morning. This sort of thing would be acceptable if occurring oftener, even to those who are past the first blush of mature years.
