OUT OF HEART.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sir, —At the present time there is a feeling of anxiety pervading all.classes on this goidfield in reference to the surplus labour in our midst—men who cannot obtain employment through no fault of their own. The evil not only affects the men out of work but every root and branch of our community. Various causes might be brought forward as being the direct and indirect means of non-employment of hundreds of able-bodied willing workmen, but there appears to be a feeling of backwardness, or keep quiet and wait a bit. Why should this be so ? The evil is not an imaginary one, but a real one,! and demands our earliest attention. True, we do not all see and think alike on these j matters. But, while we are thinking, families are clamouring, and the last loaf will soon .be on the table. You ask what can we do under the circumstances. Truly a hard question, and one that cannot be answered by one man in a minute. But this we can dobe just to ourselves and give trnthful publicity to some of the chief causes that have brought about the present depression in our labour market. To state these causes from merely one man's version and sow it broadcast would not produce any real tangible good, and to express auopinion singlehanded would be unfair to some however applicable la others, but as a means to an end I would suggest that we hold a public meeting of the unemployed, and hear their own - statements and suggestions, so that we may be better able to try and find out truthfully the causes and at once make an effort to find a remedy. —I am, &c,

6nb of the Unemployed.
