EVENING SITTING.
This day. The House went into Committee of Supply at 7.30 p.m.
On the motion of Mr O'Eorke that a gratuity of £600 be granted to the widow of the late Superintendent of Auckland, Mr John Williamson—
Mr JFitzherbert spoke at considerable length upon the finances of tlie Colony, in which he condemned the action of Mr A^ogel regarding the four million loan, compared the colony with Turkey, and said Turkey would bo no worse off than New Zealand if it had to pay eighty millions per year of interest. The credit of the Colony had been irreparably damaged. The loan could have been much better negotiated by the agents.
Mr Atkinson defended the late Colonial Treasurer from the charge of having deceived the House in regard to the finance of the country, and maintained that the four millions had been raised most advantageously. The comparison with Turkey was worthless, for Turkey's last loan realised only 43J- per cent. He regretted that the hon. member in his eagerness to censure the Government did so upon statements of third parties.
After this the Treasurer then made his additional financial statement, detailing the additional expenditure rendered necessary by the abolition of Provinces, and the Estimates were considered.
