Some time ago the inhabitants of Mackaytown organised themselves into a committee for the discovery of a practicable dray road from Mackaytown to Waitekauri. The business was entered upon with great spirit, and in order to carry it out successfully an exploring party was formed and a reward of £10 offered to the Maories if they would find a passable track which could be made into a good dray road. The exploring party under Mr A. J. Allom, and accompanied by Watcne, started on their work and after meeting with some difficulties they accomplished the task most successfully, having discovered a good track, which at moderate expense can be turned into a dray road from Mackaytown to the battery site of the Waitekauri G.M.Co. The advantages of this work are fully .set forth in the following report by Mr Allom, which is a copy of that sent to His Honor the Superintendent. A copy has also been sent to the Waitekauri G.M.Co. We may state also that Mr Allom has made a rough sketch map of the route and the country through which the road .passes.
Mackaytown, 13th October, 1875. Gentlemen,—A Committee of residents at Mackaytown have interested themselves in the discovery of a practicable dray road from Mackaytown to the proposed Battery of your Company at Waitekauri; and I am directed on behalf of Ihe Committee to forward to you a report, by Mr Allom, on the subject, to which they request your attention. The Committed have also forwarded a copy to His Honor the Superintendent, and have urged the matter upon his careful consideration before public money be spent upon any line of road to the Waitekauri District. ■ .'..■■ The Committee are of opinion that the line indicated offers so many advantages over any others, that no time should be lost in rendering it available. I am, &c, Hy. McKay, Hon. Sec. The Directors of the Waitekauri Goldmining Co.
