GOLDEN CALF.

The new four-ply rope attached to the engine for working the cage in main shaft is indicative of the change effected ia the mine. The shaft itself has been repaired, one side of which is entirely devoted to hoisting water, the other to raising quartz &c. The connection with the Otago workings by the drive and also" the winze, enables operations to be carried on with comfort to the men employed, and by the judicious placing of a door, the air from the Otajjo is forced round the drives and up into the stopes, which are now being carried upwards with a view to connect them with upper level; the quartz is of a kindly character, and measures from 12 to 15 feet, in which however there are patches of sandstone, but easily kept apart from the quartz. Gold is to be seen in small quantities; the quantity as well as the quality to be obtained from this source should be sufficient to return payable crushings. In the drive towards the east the reef is well defined, near four feet, good looking stone, and will supply, a large amount of crushing dirt. There are also other reefs with fair promises, but the manager, Mr Dunlop, as yet has had no opportunity of opening out upon them.
