(FECK X CORRESPONDENT.)
::?'■■■; WELLINGTON. ■.)■'■ ' Thig day. " Finances of the Colony. ' The report of the Finance Committee, to be brought tip in the course of a day or two, it is rumoured, will cause a sensation. Many things connected with the negociation of the four million loan are only now being found out, and gradually the assertion of Mr Kolleston, Superintendent of Canterbury, that the amount of blundering and plundering was unheard of, is likely to be verified. It is now asserted that Sir Julius Vogel, shortly after his arrival in London, proceeded to Germany, and with him went one of Eothschild's money agents That the whole financial arrangements were there arranged, and that when Sir Julius returned, of course he knew nothing of how .the* money market- stood. : Messrs Julyan and Sargeant, the Crown Agents, and Dr >Featherstone were, of course, ■" sold," and yet, as you will see from No. 18 Hansard (which you have no doubt received) the two former gentlemen re-; ceived over £3000 for their "trouble."' The Bank of New Zealand.it is said, will benefit by the loan being deposited with them to the extent of £40,000, as the rate of interest arranged for and allowed is stated to be under what it should be. No wonder that many people say that Mr Thomas Kussell rules Sir Julius Vogel. , Government Promises. The number of promises which Ministers made in the early part of the session to some of their followers, as to introducing measures affecting various interests, and their failing to redeem those promises, have operated prejudicially to the Government, and there is much dissatisfaction in consequence. The Situation. Very few know positively what will "turn up" before the session closes. There is something " behind," otherwise the hostile weekly motions introduced and debated to damage the Government would not be so continuous. As an outsider I should not be at all surprised if a direct want of confidence motion in the Ministry were tabled after the report of the Finance Committee has been laid before the House, and its contents made known throughout the Colony.
