MELBOURNE.
Lieutenant Davis, top scorer in the small-bore competition and winner of the Association gold cup, died suddenly. No speculation on Spring Meeting. Backers of horses are heavy lasers. Complaints are rife that the money was not fairly lost. Matilda Allen, a servant, having incurred the displeasure of her mistress, threw herself from a window and was killed. Steps have been taken to recover the cargo of the Cambridgeshire.
The debate on the want of confidence motion continues. The division was not expected till next week. Higinbotham, in a strong speech, favored the Ministry.
The competition between the Sydney and Victorian clubs to row on the Yarra has been decided on.
The Lenore has arrived from Batavia with a cargo of spices.
The Exhibition Committee did not consider the Australian Shale and Oil Company sufficiently original for award.
In Committee of Ways and Means Mr Stewart moved an amendment that the financial proposals of the Government were unsatisfactory. Mr Berry protested against it while Sir James McCulloch's want of confidence motion was before the House. The Opposition is much disorganised. The amendment was negatived by 29 to 6. . The debate on Sir James McCulloch's motion was still proceeding. .
