September 17. Commodore Chapman has been ordered to hoist his broad pennant as commodore commanding the Australian station until relieved.
The Standard condemns Lieutenant Armitt's scheme for the colonisation of New Guinea by 2jO volunteers for that purpose. Drs Corletti and Saphire sailed for Australia.
The wool sales were marked by considerable languor, but prices remain without noticeable alteration ; 16,000 bales were withdrawn.
The corn market is drooping and languid. The price has fallen, owing to large foreign arrivals. Australian, 548; New Zealand, 50s to 525.. Copper quiet. The tin market is firm, without hardening prices. An interview took place between M. Thiers and Prince Gortschakoff at Kevel. The latter expressed fears that the French Government would-be affected'by clerical reaction. Gortschakoff also said that the solution of the Eastern question Trill for the moment be postponed, if foreign autonomy of Bosnia and Herzegovina is secured, together with the ratification of the Montenegrin frontier. The Strathnavar, ship, which left Sydney on April 27, is supposed to be missing. Eighty guineas premium is offered for insurance. v
