GOLDEN CALF.

The prospects of this mine have within the last few days brightened ; the crosscut or rather continuation of drive on the bottom level, from engine shaft formerly known as the Just-in-Time shaft,.(to distinguish it from the upper shaft sunk on the Golden Calf section proper) having pierced through boundary and connected with Otago workings, immediately supplied the desired ventilation, and in so doing also disclosed veins of quartz of much promise in the Otago limits, but led to the finding of a winze sunk from the upper level, though nearly filled up with mullock. The importance of this is great inasmuch as the upper levels in the Otago and Golden Calf are sufficiently uniform for carrying on mining operations. Mr Dunlop, the newly appointed manager, has lost no time it ascertaining the relative positions of the levels and winze; the result proving that the level above the present working one will be available, not only for supplying mullock for filling up, but for bringing out a large large supply of. quartz leffcv from former operations on No. 1 and N0."~2 reefs. In the meantime the -winze will be cleared, effecting comr munication with the Otago shaft as well as with the long length of drive leading to the npper shaft in the company's ground. The vertical height from the bottom, or 323 feet level ig 70 feet to'the level rendered available by the winze which will give some 90 feet of backs on the No. 2 reef. Driving on the reef is now carried on towards the S.E., and in a short time the working of this property may be looked forward to as advancing towards prosperity. .
