CALEDONIAN.
The show at the battery is looking for I.'fair return upon crushing; the stone treated being from the first quartz broken down on the Cure lode within the Caledonianboundary; but from the description of ore lately shot down, the results of crushing must be of necessity greatly superior to any put through the mill for a long period. The Cure" lode has been stripped for some 20 feet. The last 12 of which has disclosed gold in rich profusion throughout the stone, the reef being not less than- 4 feet, or 5 feet crushing dirt. Gold i 3 to be plainly seen after eack shot now put in. The number of pounds of picked stone or specimens need not be stated, as thay would amount to j more than a truck full if sorted out. During the shift the drive is in 60 j feet in good country, and a large! quantity of quartz will be available for milling before the strippers j Overtake the diggers. The size of the lode evidently is enlarging, hugging the hanging wall; the more it does so the j greater length will be found within the Caledonian limits. At the end of the j drive the reef has either been functioned by a cress lode similar to other cross lodes already passed in the Cure, or else the reef has bulged out of its direct course, The aspect of tbis portion of the company's operations look well.- On the intermediate level between the 200 feet and surface and near to the western or Golden Crown boundary, workmen are extracting fair quantity of stone; which gave a capital return on the last crushing ; as also thatportion of the Young American reef pertaining to the company is yielding a fair quota of payable stone, as shown by the trial crushings. The rise from No. 2 level upon a reef to meet the Cure lode is going on as .fast as tbe tight nature of the work will allow, and will afford means of a large supply of crushing; material, the' value of which cannot be properly estimated as yet, but judging frcm the 1 ton which had been broken, out of the drive lo,ng since, and tested at the battery last week, is of a payable character, There are also works in hand at the 4CD feet level, but as these are prospecting drives no more need be said about them at present. The mine prospects have improved both in quantity and quality of material raised, and have all the indications to warrant a continuance of well doing. The present show on the Cure lode, exceeds anything yet taken from this reef, and may be imperfectly judged of by inspecting some specimens now exhibited at the Bank of New Zealand.
