This Day's Proceedings.
WELLINGTON. 3.20 p.m. This day. The House of Eepresentatives met at 2.30 p.m. Mr Eolleston asked for leave to moye for a Select Committee to inquire into certain transactions in land with the Goriment during the present session certain members of the legislature to ascertain whether these persons Lad not brought themselves within the operation of the Disqualification Act. The lion, gentleman referred to certain allegations made in the House with regard to leasing of certain lands at foot of Buapehu to a gentleman who was a member of the House .last session, and also to the land transactions with the Government admitted to by Buckland. In the former case the Government was not actually in a position to hand over tho land. The agreement in this case was the most extraordinary document he ever saw, and entirely out side the law. With regard to the Piako swamp transaction, it was not too much to say that two members of the Upper House (Williamson and Taylor) were interested. It was tolerably clear the Government were trafficking in land with members of the legislature regardless of the law.
Sir Donald McLean said he had twice before told the Hon. Gentleman he could not get the final opinion of the Solicitor-' General until all papers relating to these transactions were in, and some were now at Taupo. As for a Select Committee the Government had not the slightest objection to give every assistance in the matter. The hon: gentleman ought to know tbat in the case referred to at the base of Euapehu the Government had stepped in and secured those lands for the future, although upon certain conditions which were absolutely necessary. They had also secured other large tracts for settlement for the benefit of the country in the same way.
