WELLINGTON.
This day. "; Last evening a public meeting, 6on? vencd by the Mayor, was held to consider: the proposals now before the Assembly re Abolition of Provinces. The meeting was one of the largest ever held in Wellington. ; Mr J. H. Wallace proposed, and Mr Piirnmer seconded, the following resolution :— <• " That -this meeting approves of the, Abolition Bill as introduced by the Government, and trusts it will be carried without delay," • An amendment proposed by Mr R. J. Duncan and seconded by Mr Tracers (solicitor) was'^follows :—■■.: \ ■< ■-■■.-"That in the|ppini«n;6f'.this meeting, and considering the very short time . the Abolition of .Provinces and Local Go-, vernment Bills have been before Vthe people, and the fact that in a few months a new Parliament will be elected? it is the wisest and most constitutional course to allow the electors to gire their opinions upon questionsi.of such' vital importance,.: affecting the interests of the colonists at!, large, in the usual constitutional way, by. 1 their voted at the approaching generall elections."- \, , " , '" - Mr Pearce, M.11.R. for Wellington city, concluded his speech by saying "•! am going to vote for the Bill, and will do my best to carry-it-through the Assembly i" " - ■"\ The amendment was carried by v a large majority.
