ALTHOTraH there was neither a very large nor a very enthusiastic attendance at the public meeting last night, we believe the resolutions come to may be taken as a fair index of the state.of public feeling throughout the district regarding the Abolition of the Provinces. When we say resolutions, we mean the first, as we are inclined to look upon the appointment of the Committee to watch the progress of the measures through as altogether superfluous. . If any necessity existed for such Committee then it should have been much smaller —three at the' mo3t would have been quite sufficient. As the matter stands the Committee will have to depend mainly upon the local press for their information regarding the progress of the Government measures, and the same local press is quite equal to pointing out the necessity—should: it arise— for a further expression of , public "opinion, in case the Opposition in the House obstruct the passage of the measure on any grounds which might seeni to ; demand a protest from the people. Bo doubt there will be a most determined opposition to the measures • 'before the House, and it would materially strengthen the hands of "the Government if the constituencies in favour of abolition * would publicly express their opinions. This course would also, weaken the arguments which have been advanced by the Opposition in urging an appeal to the country. As we before remarked, we believe the- first resolution come to last night fairly represents the feelings of the Thames constituency, but there was not such a large j meeting as we . should like to have seen, or as we; expected, and there was ahalfhearteclness about some of the speakers which seemed to indicate th^t they had made a compromise with their convictions or inclinations.
