ANCIENT ORDER OF FOEESTEES.
A soiree in aid of the funds of the newly formed Juvenile Court of Foresters was held in the Academy of Music yesterday evening. Over two hundred sat down to the tea which Mr Curtis had provided, and the arrangements for which were excellent, in fact the whole affair passed off in a most pleasant manner, and reflected great credit on those who had the management of it. The Mayor who was expected to have been present was unavoidably absent, but many members from other friendly societies as well as from Auckland and Onehunga were present and evinced great pleasure at the proceedings. After tea the tables were removed, and addresses, songs, recitations, &c, occupied the time until the hour fixed for dancing. Messrs McCowatt, Nodder, Mcllhone and Douglas addressed the audience on behalf of their different societies, and several of the visitor^ from Auckland also spoke suitably to the occasion. Mr Garrick made a humorous speech replete with allusions tothe'namesof claims at the Thames, and recited, for the guidance of the j uveniles, the " Psalm of Life " from Longfellow. Mr Comes, Superintendent of the Juvenile Order delivered his views on Juvenile' Forestry, 3. W. Poulgrain, Chief Juvenile * Banger, appropriately dressed as an Ancient Forester, thanked the audience for their presence there, and tJrquhart gave a recitation very well indeed. The programme was interspersed with songs by Messrs Reed, Hart, Target and others which were heartily applauded. After a vote of thanks to the chairman D.C.R., McEwan, the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up with much spirit. [We regret that we are unable owing to the great pressure on our space, to give the substance of the speeches and other details connected with the meeting, which we think would have been read with much interest—Ed.]
A young lady who had no time to spare in making garments for the poor, has been engaged three weeks embroidering a blanket for her poodle dog.
