HOUSE OF EEPBESENTATIVES. WELLINGTON. This day, 3.20 p.m. The House met at 2.30 p.m. Mr.O'Neili'gare notice to ask why-the Bay'of Islands railway had not been constructed ; also as to the cost of water races on goldfields. . Mr Steward gave notice that he would ask .leave to introduce a bill legalising Marriage with a Deceased Wife's tester. ' Sir George^ Grey presented a petition from the early settlers of the Colony, prying that the House may cause an investigation into their claims for compensation on th« Colony," at such time and place as the House may direct. "A. number of papers and returns were laid on the table. A return was laid on the table of receipts from the Mauawatn District by the Provincial Council. Mr Bunny then asked leave to lay another paper on the table, showing the : amount expended on the Manawatu Gorge by the Provincial Council, which showed that against £126,000 received from the Manawatu, the Council will have.actually expended £136,000 when the two bridges now in hand are completed.
