CHICKET.

A meeting, convened by Mr P. W. Paul on behalf of those interested ia having a ground whereon to play this year, was held yesterday evening in the " Governor Bowen Hotel. We were unfeignedly glad to see some gentlemen ■ present .who, though not playerii themselves, yet showed by their presence and - the interest "they appeared to take in the proceedings - that they were anxious to assist in any .endeavor which might be made for the wholesome amusement ofothers.

Mr \F. W. Paul was called to the chair, and he briefly explained the object of. the meeting, viz., to avail themselves of the kind offer which he understood Mr Spencer had made —of placing his ground , at Parawai at the disposal of 'Jhames cricketers. ■

Mr Spencer said he Was anxious to do all he could to promote the enjoyment of others. He had a piece of ground at Parawai suitable for cricket, which he thought might be made into a cricket ground at an expense of about £20. He had rollers there both large'and small, which he would place at the disposal of those who might- have care of. the ground, and do all in his power to assist in keeping the ground in playing order. ' He also said that all subscribers to the fund of T^n shillings and upwards should have free permiisiori to enter the grounds at all times for the purpose either of practising or watching , cricket. - • - . . „ Mr Colson pointed out how great was the necessity if cricket was to be played at all this year of losing no time in commencing the work of laying down a cricket ground. He thought that £20, would probably be insufficient, to carry out the necessary improvements, as they would certainly require a mowing machine. He would, therefore propose that.before any step 3be taken, with regard to making . a practice ground at Shortland, a sum not exceeding £30 (or a less sum if sufficient) be expended on the Parawai grounds. , .. Mr Gallion seconded the motion, which . . was carried. ■ '[' .. ' ' .' „

. It was then resolved that those present form themselves into a committee,:to - collect subscriptions. Mr P. Paul was, then appointed Treasurer, and Mr. Whitford Secretary. , '- A vote of thanks was then passed to Mr Spencer for his disinterestedness and kindness in giving his. ground free of . charge. (If we are rightly informed, the sum of £30 was asked for the same privileges last year as Mr Spencer now gives gratis.) .. ' Mr Spencer in acknowledging the rote of thanks said that though .not a player himself, he always took a great interest in cricket as well as other sports, and would do his best to forward their inte-: ' rests. ■ '■ ■ . " .•..-.'

Messrs Paul, Colson, Spencer,, Walker, and Whitford, were then appointed a committee to have the entire manage* ment of the^ ground and the expendi-.,.: tare of the funds collected; aad in the event, of there being any lurplus furfds to expend vfchem on any practice ground they might select. After . a vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting separated. We are authorited to say that any pubV x seriber of ten shillings and upwards will receive a member's ticket entitling him to free admission. It is greatly, to be hoped that all those intending to subscribe will do so at once, as the Committee wish to lose no time in setting about making the ''=■ ground; and they cannot proceed, until they know on what amount of public support they may rely. . Subscription: lists are now open.
